San Diego East West Yoga & Health Center

Tips For Class

NEW STUDENTS
The first time you attend the center please arrive 10 minutes early for your class. You will be asked to fill out a waiver form before the class begins.

SPECIAL NEEDS
Please inform the instructor of any injuries, or chronic illness (this includes injuries past or present and/or medical problems such as high blood pressure or heart conditions). Exercises can be modified and may also help these conditions.

MENSTRUAL PERIOD
During menstruation avoid inversions and strenuous postures.

CLOTHING
Feet should be bare. Wear t-shirts, shorts or leggings, or other comfortable workout clothes. Arrive clean and free of scents that might distract or offend others. Don't bring pagers or cell phones to class.

PROPS
Blankets, mats and other props are provided or you can use your own yoga sticky mat. Bring a towel or your own mat if you sweat a lot. Remember to pick up and put away any props you use.

DRINKING AND EATING
Come to class well hydrated, and with an empty stomach. Don't eat for two or three hours before class.

GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR CLASS

  • Everyone comes to class with different levels of strength and flexibility. Resist the urge to be competitive.
  • Arrive early. Getting to class about 10 minutes early helps you center yourself and set your intentions for the practice.
  • Each class is taught as a sequence of poses gradually building in intensity. The beginning and the end are important components of the class. If you must leave early, let your teacher know and allow yourself a few minutes of relaxation before you go.
  • Sometimes stretches are intense. To avoid injury, do not force your body beyond its capacity. Come out of a posture if it does not feel safe or if you experience any pain in a joint. Talk to the instructor.
  • Pertinent questions or comments during a class are encouraged and welcomed, yet also observe quietness to help you focus on your practice.
  • Avoid holding your breath. Remember to breathe in the poses.
  • Practice! Take time after class to review what you learned, even if you remember just one pose. Try the poses at home to deepen your practice.
